ROSENBERG, Texas – Aldi Inc., a leading low price grocer will build a 650,000 sf distribution center and divisional headquarters in Rosenberg, a community located southwest of Houston. The new ALDI facility in Rosenberg will serve the company’s emerging Houston market. As of May 2013, Batavia, Illinois-based ALDI had opened 12 new stores in the Houston area, and plans to grow rapidly in the market.
The distribution center and divisional headquarters will be located along US Highway 90A, just west of Rude Road, on a tract offered by Tarantino Properties. The tract will provide ALDI prime access to Interstate 69 (US 59). The facility is anticipated to be valued at $44 million, with an additional $20 million in taxable inventory. Construction on the facility is anticipated to begin in early 2014, with completion in October 2015.
“We are pleased to bring our Houston distribution center and divisional headquarters to Rosenberg,” said Scott Huska, Denton division vice president for ALDI, which considered 30 sites in the Houston region before selecting the Rosenberg site.
The City of Rosenberg City Council approved 70 percent tax abatement on the building and equipment for 10 years. Fort Bend County will consider a similar tax abatement agreement at an upcoming Commissioner’s Court meeting. In addition to the tax abatement, the RDC approved a $500,000 reimbursement for infrastructure and development costs once the facility is completed, and agreed to reimburse a portion of sales tax collected on eligible construction materials.
Initial discussions with ALDI were facilitated by the Greater Houston Partnership in September 2011. The City and RDC worked in conjunction with Fort Bend County Commissioner Richard Morrison, and the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council to recruit ALDI. ALDI was represented in the search process by Raymond Walker with the Walker Cos. of Atlanta.
A leader in the grocery retailing industry, ALDI operates more than 1,200 US stores in 32 states, primarily from Kansas to the East Coast
