Home Building Reaches Snook, Texas

SNOOK, Texas – (Realty News Report) – Century Communities, one of the largest home builders in the nation, is starting a new subdivision in Snook, an old town about 90 miles from Houston.

Snook – population 545 – was settled in the 1880s by Czech immigrants who were attracted to the area’s fertile farmland.

In Snook, Century Communities is developing a community called Grand Lake, which will have 14 single-family homes priced from the low $200s.

The development is a 20-minute drive from Texas A&M University.

Century, a publicly traded home builder based in Greenwood Village, Colorado, is starting five new communities in the Houston area in Willis, Bryan, Huntsville and Snook.

The Expanding Houston Metropolitan Area

New home construction and development now covers a wide swath of the Houston metropolitan area, which has been one of the two top markets in the nation’s count of home starts, along with Dallas-Fort Worth.

From Galveston on the south to Willis on the north – a distance of 100 miles – the Houston area hums with activity.

About three years ago, the Howard Hughes Corp. opened The Woodlands Hills, a new 2,000-acre master planned community being developed 13 miles north of The Woodlands (28,000 acres.)  Conceived as aa northern sequel to The Woodlands, The Woodlands Hills, located in the Willis school district, will have 4,500 homes when completed.

John S. Snook

The town of Snook was named after John S. Snook, who was credited with establishing a U.S. Post Office there in 1895. Rudimentary telephone service arrived in Snook in 1901, according to the Texas Almanac.

Today, theCentury Communities home building outfit, touts the ability to sell single-family homes online – (yes, over the internet) in Snook and other towns in southeast Texas.

Other new communities announced by Century Communities include Teal Crossing, a 67-home development in Willis; Thomas Heights, a 7-home project in Bryan; Crown Point, aa 94-home development in Huntsville; and Foxwood Crossing, a 107-home subdivision in Bryan.
