HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – A team led by Los Angeles-based Kevin Daly Architects has been selected as the design the new Houston Endowment headquarters building on a site overlooking Spotts Park and Buffalo Bayou, just west of downtown.
The Daly team, which includes along with Productora of Mexico City and TLS Landscape Architecture of Berkeley, Calif., was selected as by the judges of an international design competition that attracted 121 entries comprising 354 individual firms from 22 countries.
The Houston Endowment intends for building to be architectural jewel that contributes to the beauty of the city.
The winning design concept features an airy superstructure generously shaded by a large canopy within a grove of oak trees. The proposal is strongly connected to the site and context: the landscape and history of Spotts Park. Kevin Daly Architects (KDA) said, the new building, which is attuned to Houston’s demanding climate and expanding greenspace, is intended to be, “as welcoming as the shadow beneath a tree.”
The $20 million building is slated to open in 2022. The collaborative team also includes Arup, Transsolar, and Houston-based Kirksey Architecture. The winning team will now work with Houston Endowment and stakeholders to develop this initial design concept. Longer term, KDA and team may work with us to consult with the local community and the city authorities on possible improvements to Spotts Park, including the planting of new trees.
Kevin Daly attended graduate school at Rice University in the 1980s. His firm’s recent work includes the UCLA Ostin Music Building, the Backyard BI(h)OME and the Berkeley Global Campus.
The full Selection Committee was chaired by Joseph C. Dilg, Board Member, Houston Endowment and included Jesse H. Jones II, Board Chair, Houston Endowment; Guy Hagstette, Vice President of Parks and Civic Projects, Kinder Foundation; Ann Stern, President and CEO, Houston Endowment; TomForney, President and CEO, Forney Construction; Alex Washburn, Principal, DRAW Brooklyn; Meejin Yoon, Principal, Höweler and Yoon Architecture; and Malcolm Reading, Competition Director.
