AUSTIN – (Realty News Report) – Incentives to build a $17 billion chip factory are being discussed by Samsung Electronics and government officials in Taylor, Texas, a town about 30 miles northeast of downtown Austin.
The massive Samsung factory, according to a proposal on file with Williamson County, would have 6 million SF of buildings on a 1,200-acre site owned by Samsung.
Some 1,800 people would be employed at the computer chip factory to produce advanced semiconductors to meet global demand that has outstripped current supply and slowed industry, including auto manufacturing.
The Taylor site is east of Interstate 35 and about 15 miles from the town of Round Rock, where the Dell computer company is headquartered.
The addition of the Samsung factory would expand the technology center reputation of Austin, which currently has facilities operated by Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, Oracle, Google, Facebook, to name a few.
Samsung, which hopes to break ground on a new chip factory in the first quarter of 2022 and start production in 2024, told the Austin Business Journal on Friday that it continues to consider several locations for the new plant. Nothing has been finalized with officials in Taylor.
Seoul-based Samsung has disclosed that it is considering sites in Arizona, New York, in South Korea and in Travis County (Austin) where it already has a factory.
The Taylor acreage is south of US Highway 79 and west of FM 973 in Williamson County.
“The county recognizes that development of the (Samsung) project will likely serve as an economic stimulus to the area, resulting in significant job growth and increased tax revenue for the county, the Taylor Independent School District, and the City of Taylor, Texas,” says a draft of the county’s agreement.
The unsigned document, called Williamson County Development Agreement, outlines the obligations between the county and Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC.
Roadways and infrastructure around the chip factory would be improved and tax incentives would be granted to Samsung.
Another large manufacturing facility, a 4 million-SF Tesla factory, is under construction in east Austin.
