Amazon Planning 1 Million-SF Facility Near Houston

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – (Realty News Report) – Amazon, which is adding over 1,000 new distribution centers around the nation, is opening a 1 million-SF fulfillment center in Missouri City on the southwest side of Houston.

The new facility, scheduled to open in about a year,  will be located near the intersection of the Fort Bend Tollway and Highway 6, at 2303 Hurricane Lane.

Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment, said: “We look forward to creating over 500 jobs for the local community, with industry-leading pay and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.”

At the fulfillment center Amazon employees will work to pick, pack, and ship bulky or larger-sized customer items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment, or rugs.

E-commerce market share has been rapidly expanding during the coronavirus pandemic and brick-and-mortar retailers strive to attract walk-in customers. Amazon has been hiring at a rapid pace. The Seattle-based firm hired 100,000 people in March alone.

Amazon, which has 43,000 employees in Texas,  has been constructing new facilities across the state. In Pflugerville, Texas – a suburb of Austin, Amazon is developing a 3.8 million SF distribution facility on 94 acres near State Highway 130.

An 850,000-SF fulfillment center is under development in Richmond in Fort Bend County.

“Missouri City and Amazon are alike when it comes to success, diversity, customer service and community. We are looking forward to this new business model, which focuses on customer service and expands the economy as this is another partnership that will build on our commercial tax base, helping to ease the property tax burden on residents,” said Missouri City Mayor Yolanda Ford. “Expanding the economic base is a citizen and City Council priority, and this new Amazon center helps to achieve that goal. It’s just another step in moving Missouri City’s economy forward into the future.”

Amazon pays a minimum $15 per hour wage and the company offers full-time employees comprehensive benefits including full medical, vision, and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) with 50 percent match starting on day one.
