New Hotel in Old Downtown Building Gains AAA Four Diamond Ranking

The Petroleum Building, built in 1927, has been transformed into a Cambria hotel.

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – The new Cambria Hotel Houston Downtown Convention Center has received the coveted Four Diamond ranking from AAA.

The 226-room hotel is located in the former Great Southwest Building, 1314 Texas Avenue, a historic building constructed in 1927.

Cambria Hotels is the upscale brand from Choice Hotels International.

Managed by Concord Hospitality, one of the nation’s leading hospitality development and management companies, this is the first hotel from the Cambria brand to be awarded this distinction.

“We are honored to receive the AAA Four Diamond designation and be considered one of the most prestigious properties nationwide,” said Michele Siegel, General Manager of the Cambria Hotel Houston Downtown Convention Center. “It is exciting to see the first Cambria in Houston gain recognition for outstanding service and hospitality at a time when the Cambria brand continues to gain momentum and national recognition.”

The property features 226 rooms as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center, ballroom and multi-function meeting spaces situated on the 20th floor.

Joseph S. Cullinan, founder of the Texas Company, an early-day oil firm that became Texaco, developed the building in 1927. Originally, it was envisioned as a multi-tenant office tower to be occupied a variety of oil companies in what was then a fledgling energy industry. Thus, the tower was called The Petroleum Building.

Rising over 20 stories high, the tower was designed by architects Alfred C. Blossom of New York and Maurice Sullivan in what has been characterized as an Art Deco exotic design motif. In recent years, it was called the Great Southwest Building.

“The hotel is honored to uphold the history and grandeur of the Great Southwest Building in itsown way at the Downtown Houston location,” said Kristie Byrd, Regional Vice President of Sales for Concord Hospitality.
