AUSTIN – A groundbreaking was held Monday for The Independent, a 58-story condominium that will be the tallest residential tower in Texas.

The project will have 370 condos priced from the mid- $400,000s to $3.4 million. The site is at the northeast corner of West Third Street and West Avenue, next to Shoal Creek.

The Independent is developed by two Austin firms, Constructive Ventures and Aspen Heights and the CIM Group of Los Angeles.

In December, The Independent’s development group announced it had closed on the $14.5 million purchase of 1.7 acres of land located at the northeast corner of West Third Street and West Avenue in downtown Austin from the City of Austin, enabling site work to begin.

The developers say a significant number of buyers have already committed to purchasing units. Balfour Beatty Construction, should complete the $300 million tower in 2018. Architecture is by Rhode: Partners.

Slated to rise 685 feet, The Independent will be the tallest building in Austin one of the tallest residential towers west of the Mississippi River.  The 645-foot Millennium Tower in San Francisco is also 58 stories tall, the same number of floors as planned for The Independent, although

The 950,000-square-foot proposed building has already been nicknamed the Jenga Tower because some say it resembles a wood-block stacking game.

The tallest office building in Texas is the 75-story, 1002-foot tall J.P. Morgan Chase Tower, 600 Travis St. in downtown Houston.
