Camp Strake Acreage Eyed for Montgomery County’s First Medical School

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State University is in preliminary discussions regarding the creation of a medical school on the former Camp Strake property in Montgomery County north of Houston.

The scenario, as it is currently envisioned, would result in about 10 acres being donated to the university by Johnson Development, the owner of Camp Strake. If funding and regulatory approvals are met, Sam Houston would construct the first medical school in Montgomery County.

The deal is a long way from being completed. The university does not currently own the land. Johnson has not donated the property.

“It’s in the very, very preliminary stages,” University spokeswoman Julia May said Monday.

Camp Strake was a 2,000-acre Boy Scout camp that was acquired by Houston-based Johnson Development last year. Led by Larry Johnson, the development firm is one of the most prolific community developers in the nation. The Camp Strake land will be transformed into a master planned community with hundreds of single-family homes and commercial development.
