SUGAR LAND, Texas – (Realty News Report) – Applied Optoelectronics Inc., a manufacturer of fiber-optic networking products used in data centers, CATV broadband, and other applications, announced an expansion of its Sugar Land operations that will create over 500 manufacturing and technology jobs.
The expansion, announced in conjunction with the City of Sugar Land, consists of a new manufacturing line at the company’s headquarters at 13139 Jess Pirtle Blvd. and a new 210,000-SF facility for manufacturing optical transceivers for AI-focused data centers. It is expected to be in service by summer of 2026.
“AOI builds infrastructure that powers the most advanced computing systems in the largest data centers in the world,” Stefan Murry, AOI’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer. “We are committed to growing our roots and expanding our U.S.-based production capabilities here in Sugar Land, where we have enjoyed lasting support from the city leaders and the community. With our new advanced manufacturing facility, we look forward to growing our workforce by 500 new jobs, helping to attract new and diverse talent to meet the increasing demands of our customers adapting to the AI era.”
The expansion project, which represents a capital investment of over $150 million, will bring part of the company’s international manufacturing operations to the U.S. The jobs are expected to be created over the next five years, more than doubling the AOI’s current Sugar Land employee count of nearly 450. The expansion is supported by a $2 million incentive package with the City of Sugar Land, with assistance from Fort Bend County.

Founded in 1997 at the University of Houston, AOI opened its Sugar Land headquarters in 2000. The company’s products are used in data centers, CATV broadband, telecom, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) markets. Microsoft are Oracle are among the company’s biggest customers in the internet data center market.
“AOI’s planned expansion project million is a major win for the Greater Houston region and underscores the strategic advantage of onshoring advanced manufacturing right here in our community,” said Steve Kean, CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership.
Tech manufacturing is also booming In Northwest Houston where Apple has just begun shipping AI servers from a new factory off of Fairbanks North Houston Road. Foxconn, a manufacturing partner with chip maker Nvidia, recently acquired a 1 million SF for $142 million in Houston for supercomputer manufacturing plant. Foxconn bought the 86.3-acre facility from Dalfen Industrial.
Last week, Electronic Power Design announced construction of a 144,000-SF manufacturing facility near Interstate 45 and Bush Airport at 430 Lockhaven Drive.
