Saying It Must Be in a ‘Global City’, Firm Moves HQ from Sugar Land to Miami

CANTORIA, Spain – (By Dale King) — The Cosentino Group, a major producer and distributor of innovative surfaces for architectural and design work, has issued a statement saying the firm will move its North American headquarters out of Houston and to the city of Coral Gables near Miami, this summer.

A Cosentino executive said the family-owned company based in Spain wants to locate in a “global city” so it can “continue to grow strongly in the coming years.”

Fla. Gov. Rick Scott said the relocation will create 85 new jobs and invest more than $1 million in the local community. Cosentino currently employs 60 Floridians across three distribution locations in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Lauderhill.

Coral Gables, home to the University of Miami, is located southwest of downtown Miami. The US Census in 2013 said the city has a population of just under 50,000.

A noted fabricator of quartz, natural stone and recycled surfaces, Cosentino moved its corporate offices from Stafford to the Sugar Land Town Square, 2245 Texas Ave., Sugar Land, in 2013. The Spanish company will vacate 29,000 SF of office space in the Town Square development.

Eduard Cosentino , in a news release last week, praised for the Texas location. “Since we opened the subsidiary [Cosentino North America] in 1997, Houston has been an incredible place for our operations in the USA, and our business in the city as well as in Texas will continue to grow strongly in the coming years.”

“However,” he added, “it is clear that in order to sustain our growth and achieve greater efficiency, we need our corporate headquarters to be located in a global city, from where we can centralize management for the American continent.”

He said the company’s operations network “is mainly composed of 42 ‘Cosentino Centers,’ 36 in the US and four in Canada, as well as three ‘Cosentino City,’ or showrooms, and two distribution hubs.”

Cosentino recently opened six new ‘Centers’ in the USA, facilities that combine the functions of warehouse, training center, offices and showroom, most of them in new states, he said. “These launches mean that Cosentino now has its own facilities in half of the 50 American states. The company thus proves its firm commitment to a key commercial market that currently represents 55% of the group’s total sales, and where the company is now a leader in the sector.”

Cosentino already counts three of these showrooms in New York, Toronto and Montreal, which will have its official opening in the coming weeks. In addition, two other Cosentino City Centers will open, one in San Francisco at the end of April and a fifth in Miami’s Design District in July. Completing the network are two distribution hubs and 12 fabrication plants.

The decision to relocate “will bring greater efficiency to the management of the North American market as well as better coordination both with the group’s headquarters in Almeria and with the rest of the continent”.

Miami is not only currently one of the largest and richest cities in the country, he noted, but it is an indispensable reference point for the most prestigious architects and designers in the world and offers significant business opportunities and new projects.

“Without a doubt,” he said, “this move will help us in our objective of expanding even more in the USA over the coming years, consolidating our leadership and being able to meet the demands of this competitive market.”

The Cosentino Group distributes its products and brands in more than 80 countries, from its headquarters in Almeria, Spain. Currently, the firm maintains a presence in 32 countries, with its own assets in 29 of them. The group has seven factories, one intelligent logistic platform in Spain and more than 120 commercial and business units throughout the world.

Eduardo Cosentino said company brands have grown to become leaders in their respective segments such as Silestone, Dekton and Sensa by Cosentino. All are technologically advanced surfaces which allow the creation of exclusive designs for the home and public spaces.
