Journalist Parimal M. Rohit Passes

IRVINE, Calif. – Parimal M. Rohit, an experienced journalist who covered real estate and other topics in California and Texas, died suddenly on Tuesday. He was 48.

Rohit, who was on the real estate beat at the Orange County Business Journal, died when he suffered a heart attack shortly after turning in a news story, one of thousands he wrote during an impressive career.

Earlier, he covered real estate in Houston and Austin while working as a staffer at CoStar News and he was a staffer at the Austin Business Journal for several years.

Rohit, who held a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a master’s from University of San Francisco, worked for many publications over the years, including the Santa Monica Mirror and India West.

Rohit was an active member in NAREE – the National Association of Real Estate Editors.

“Parimal will be missed. He was well liked and respected by his peers from across the country,” said NAREE President Tony Wilbert, an editor at CoStar News. “Parimal could connect with anyone, and in authentic way, whether he told stories of his love for the Los Angeles Lakers and meeting Kobe Bryant or his friends who are Bollywood stars. Parimal made real estate reporting relatable, interesting and fun.”

At the recent NAREE conference in New Orleans, Rohit moderated a panel entitled: “Converting Commercial Sites and Industrial Land to Live, Work & Play.”

“Parimal was patient and kind, rare in a high achieving journalist in these sobering times,” said Mary Doyle-Kimball, NAREE Executive Director. “He also had a way about him that made you laugh even in high pressure situations. So happy to have known him.”

Rohit was also interested in environmental issues and edited publication for the Society of Environmental Journalists. In 2017, his report in The Log newspaper on sea level rise and inaction was named Best Environmental Story in the San Diego Press Club’s Excellence in Journalism Awards.

A Bhajan was held in his honor on Oct. 8. Funeral arrangements are pending.
