HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – Moody National Development has broken ground on a multifamily community that is the first phase of a redevelopment of the historic Shadowdale Grain Elevator site along the Katy Freeway.
Plans for the 17-acre development include 80,000 SF of retail, multifamily, a possible office and a boutique hotel in future years. The development will incorporate the landmark grain elevator silos.
The Widest Freeway in the World?
The development faces one of the widest freeway routes in the world – a total 26 lanes of freeway, frontage road lanes, and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes that are called the Katy Freeway or Interstate 10 West. The daily traffic count is 330,000 cars a day.
Houston-based Moody National says it will “refresh” the historic silos with paint, lighting and signage. The development of the entire site is estimated to take 10 years to complete.
“We are excited for the procession of the multi-phase development,” Chairman of the Board and CEO Brett Moody of Moody National Companies said. “The Village Express, the area of I-10 running from the 610-Loop to the Beltway, is one of widest highways in the United States when you include the feeders and HOV lanes, carrying over 330,000 cars per day.”
The New Silo Springs Apartments
The new Moody National multifamily community, Silo Springs, a five-story, 346-unit high-end apartment community is near the Northeast quadrant of I-10 West and the Beltway.
Located at 1235 Shadowdale Dr., Silo Springs is the initial phase of a decade-long, multi-phase, mixed-use development at the site of the historic Shadowdale grain elevators, making the long-vacant silos a focal point to the 17-acre development.

“Since we purchased this parcel, the size of five downtown city blocks, we partnered with our design, development and construction team to find the most optimal integration of the silos as a significant feature of the development,” Moody said. “We intend to cut pedestrian walkways through the silos themselves to allow guests to navigate from the retail on Westview to the retail on the ground floor of the Phase 2 structure, which will include a high- end multifamily, Silo Villas. We also plan a water feature within the silos, creating an active art installation set in the middle of the development. We view this parcel like a lady-in-waiting whose debut, after a decades-long wait, has finally arrived.”
Arch-Con Corp. is the general contractor for the initial phase designed by PVEDI (formerly EDI International) and Stantec (formerly Page). Silo Springs consists of five stories of apartment living totaling 363,547 SF with one-, two- and three-bedroom offerings. This is a wrap-style project with apartments designed around a 165,163-SF, six-story parking garage.

A 2,200-SF café is located near the Westview Drive entrance and will be open to the public. PVEDI and Stantec collaborated on the Interior Design. PVEDI was also the Landscape Architect for the project. Amenities at Silo Springs include a two-story-high clubroom and fitness room, a game lounge, a business lounge with multiple private conference rooms. The main ground-level courtyard includes a pool with waterfall, a fire table feature, mist spring fountain, private cabanas, and a pet park.
Arch-Con has collaborated with Moody on several projects, including the construction of the 16- story Residence Inn Medical Center and Village Towers, a 350,000-SF mixed-use Class A office development, housing Moody National Companies’ headquarters.
“Due to the proximity of our headquarters to this market, we have a good understanding of the demands of the area and the needs of our future residents.” Moody added. Moody will be the property manager for the project. Soon after the site was acquired, Arch-Con started working with Moody on pricing.
“We are eager to work with Moody National Companies again,” Arch-Con Senior Vice President Michael Vaughn said. “This high-end wrap project will be a stunning addition to West Houston and integrating the silos into the design will be a significant draw to the development.”
In 2023, Arch-Con was involved in redeveloping an 1800s-vintage lumber mill east of Downtown Houston with developer Triten Real Estate Partners.
Years ago, city leaders considered proposals to construct a commuter rail line along the Katy Freeway, but they elected to go with car-dependent transportation instead.
