New Icehouse Debuts on East River Golf Course

HOUSTON – (Realty News Report) – A new bar and restaurant from the team behind The Rustic and Bowl & Barrel has opened a golf-side location overlooking downtown Houston.

FreeRange Concepts has opened Birdies Icehouse in the former Riverhouse Houston space in East River, a long-term, 150-acre mixed-use development by Midway.

Birdies Icehouse is located at 65 Hirsch Road within East River 9, a nine-hole, Par 3 golf course with driving range, putting green, and pickleball courts on the banks of Buffalo Bayou.

Developed in partnership with East River 9, the space features a wide patio with plenty of TVs and an oversized LED screen for game watching. Offerings include beer, casual food, and hand-crafted cocktails.

“Birdies Icehouse was created to be a true icehouse in both feel and function,” said Kyle Noonan, co-owner and CEO of FreeRange Concepts. “The focus is cold drinks, big screens and plenty of room to settle in—especially at sunset along the bayou. You can host a corporate event, stop by for happy hour, or catch a game. The space supports all three equally well.”

With more than 25,000 SF of event space, Birdies Icehouse can accommodate gatherings from 20 to 3,000 people.

Golfing and pickleball are just steps away, with East River 9’s community-focused course and courts welcoming beginners and seasoned players alike. The lighted course allows for evening play.

“East River 9 is much more than a golf course; it is a place for the community to call its own.” said Clayton Freels, founder and developer of East River 9. “Together with Birdies Icehouse, we are elevating the atmosphere, service, and F&B quality to deliver a well-rounded experience for all.”

East River Phase I, consisting of 26 acres at Jensen and Clinton Drives, broke ground five years ago in Houston’s Fifth Ward neighborhood. It includes 300,000 SF of office, 100,000 SF of retail, and The Laura, a 360-unit multifamily development.

Dallas-based FreeRange Concepts operates The Rustic, Bowl & Barrel, and The General Public, among other concepts. The Rustic, a restaurant and live music venue, has temporarily closed its downtown Houston location while it relocates to make way for the expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Birdies Icehouse will hold an opening celebration on March 18.
