Home Builder Buys 127 Acres in Redevelopment of Historic Imperial Sugar Campus

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Meritage Homes has purchased 127 acres in Imperial Sugar Land, a redevelopment mixed-use of a historic sugar production campus of a well known brand name in sugar.

Imperial Sugar Land, is now a 716-acre master-planned community by Johnson Development Corp., just southwest of Houston.  Imperial Sugar Co., the oldest continuously operating business in the State of Texas, processed sugar on the site for more than 160 years.

Meritage will develop 335 home sites in the Imperial Sugar project, located at Highway 6 and Highway 90A. The acquisition represents about a third of the land to be developed in the community, according to Imperial Sugar Land General Manager Shay Shafie.

“This is a terrific opportunity to establish a presence in one of Fort Bend’s true gems,” notes Steve Harding, Houston division president of Meritage Homes.

In addition to its residential components, Imperial Sugar Land will have retail, residential, entertainment and office to create a premier Sugar Land destination. Imperial also is home to a weekly Farmer’s Market, Constellation Field baseball stadium and the future homes of the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center and the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation Museum.
